Costa de la Luz, Huelva
The essence of Andalusia
True to its nickname - the ‘Costa de la Luz’-, Huelva’s coastline is bathed in a warm and brilliant light that tempts visitors to spend time relaxing and exploring this fabulous natural setting by the sea. Indeed, this stretch of the Andalusian coastline is one long succession of delightful landscapes.
The mouth of the River Piedras and the tides have shaped a whimsical landscape alternating dunes and pine forests with fresh and salt water marshlands. A long sand spit shelters this area from the onslaught of the Atlantic Ocean. The arrow-shaped El Rompido sand spit guarantees the protection of the area’s vast environmental wealth, which forms a unique ecosystem that is home to protected species of major interest.
The town of El Rompido still retains the essence of a traditional fishing harbour.

The beaches and surroundings
The town of El Rompido stands halfway between the boroughs of Cartaya and Lepe, at the mouth of the River Piedras. Home to an ancient fishing harbour, it boasts a long-standing seafaring tradition and has bred many fine sailors. Yet it has also been blessed with more than 10 km of peaceful, unspoilt beaches bathed by calm, crystal-clear waters, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a unique sandbank and dune system known as La Flecha de El Rompido, and which has led to the formation of the River Piedras marshlands.
Leisure and free time
This fabulous spot offers countless leisure and sports options. Take advantage of the specially designated trails to explore the stunning coastal scenery by Segway, bicycle or on foot; kayak or canoe down the River Piedras; enjoy sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding or a boat trip in the Gulf of Cadiz, or sharpen up your swing on the golf courses situated just a short distance from the hotel. Local facilities also include a sports centre, water park and the Cartaya Karting Complex.
Flora and fauna
The area known as the Dehesa de San Miguel, that surrounds El Rompido, was declared a Protected Natural Space in 1989 and is also a Special Protection Area for Birds. They are home to species such as the osprey, the common whimbrel or the ruddy turnstone. They are also the breeding grounds for numerous migratory species such as the western marsh harrier, the Caspian tern and the little tern. As for reptiles, chameleons are probably the most characteristic sight. In Europe, these intriguing creatures can only be found on the coasts of Andalusia and Murcia in Spain, and on the Portuguese Algarve.
The grasses and plants that grow in the sand dunes of El Rompido include thymus carnosus and poaceae gaudinia hispanica.
History and culture
This coastal town boasts a rich cultural and historical legacy and conserves traces of ancient civilisations: the Phoenicians, Muslims and Romans all left behind them magnificent archaeological remains. San Miguel Castle is an Arab fortress, although inside it houses exhibits dating as far back as the Bronze Age. Other fascinating monuments include the tide mills, built during the 19th century on the banks of the River Piedras, and the town’s old lighthouse, which has recently been restored.
Those that appreciate fine food and drink should head for the Aracena Mountain Range where, amidst the chestnut and holm oak trees, herds of Iberian pigs root happily. This region is home to the magnificent Jabugo cured ham, a gastronomic delight whose succulent flavour and irresistible aroma have rightly earned it a magnificent reputation both in Spain and abroad.
However, the area has more to offer than just ham. It is also rich in delicious fish and shellfish. Particularly worthy of mention are the coquina clams, white prawns and fiddler crabs that are caught in the River Piedras and are considered to be a delicacy among the locals. Other traditional dishes include chilled gazpacho, pescaíto frito (fried fish) and atún de almadraba (tuna characterised by its deliciously tender red meat).
This Huelva region is also noted for its superb wines, which hold the Condado de Huelva Designation of Origin. Particularly delicious are the young, fruity whites and the flavoursome, full-bodied velvety wines.
