An atmosphere that seduces
The magic simply never stops on the Mediterranean’s most international and cosmopolitan island. Its dazzlingly intense light reflects off the traditional houses painted pure white and which form an intrinsic part of the island’s traditional landscape.
500 km2 that are home to countless tiny treasures that visitors will enjoy discovering: peaceful inlets and towns and villages that remain impervious to the passing of time blend into the sensual atmosphere of richly-painted sunsets and endless nights of thrills and excitement.
Ibiza remains a strategic location in the Mediterranean. Renowned as a haven for the hippy movement in the late 1960s, its popular weekly street markets are well worth a visit, lined with stalls selling charming local crafts. Ibiza, the largest of the Pityusic Islands, is also the gateway to its breathtakingly beautiful neighbour, the island of Formentera.

Santa Eulària des Riu, Ibiza
SHIMMERING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
Ibiza is known by many as the ‘island of light’. More than 200 km of coastline dotted with delightful coves and charming spots bathed in bright, warm sunshine. Spectacular sunsets cast their rays of subtle hues that gradually fade away on the horizon, leaving us with those thrilling Ibiza nights. When it comes to discovering the full magic of the Mediterranean, there’s nowhere like Ibiza.
The beaches and surroundings
This holiday heaven boasts a prime location that offers a melting pot of tradition, culture, nature, art and fun. Visitors to Ibiza will find large beaches for all the family or magical secluded coves, as well as stunningly beautiful islets and breathtakingly beautiful protected nature spaces.
Lying some 15 km from Ibiza Town (Eivissa), the borough of Santa Eulària des Riu is peppered with spectacular beaches including Cala Llonga, Cala Nova, S’Argamassa or Es Canar. A wide promenade runs conveniently along the coastline, making it a popular choice for enjoying a relaxing evening stroll.
Leisure and free time
Ibiza offers countless leisure options for all the family. Its famously deep turquoise waters are great for water sports of all kinds: sailing, surfing, water skiing, canoeing or scuba diving - the choice is yours. Take a Segway, bicycle or simply walk along any of the myriad trails that will take you through endless beauty spots, tucked away between the almond groves and traditional orchards.
Yet there’s much more to the Pityusic Islands than this: visitors will have fun shopping at the hippy and craft markets, joining in the wide range of cultural activities or visiting local museums. There really is something for everyone, ranging from conventions and congresses to children’s shows and upmarket nightlife in the clubs and discos that are famous throughout the world.
Flora and fauna
Ibiza’s coastline is home to a large number of autochthonous species that thrive on the rocky seabed and in the meadows of Neptune grass that contribute to the outstanding quality and transparency of its waters. Large colonies of seabirds live just off the coast, including the Yelkouan shearwater, Audouin’s Gull and the European shag.
On dry land, visitors should keep an eye out for some of the many small reptiles, including the unmistakable Ibiza wall lizards and the gecko (tarentola mauritanica).
History and culture
The Phoenicians, Punics, Romans and Carthaginians are just a few of the many civilizations that have contributed to the rich tapestry of Ibiza’s cultural legacy.
In 1999 Dalt Vila, the walled enclosure in Eivissa, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fine example of coastal fortifications has been perfectly conserved. World Heritage status was also awarded to the extramural quarters of La Marina, Sa Penya and Es Soto, as well as the Punic cemetery of Puig des Molins, the Phoenician town of Sa Caleta and the ancient kitchen gardens at Ses Feixes.
Ibiza’s cuisine is a mouth-watering mix of meat and fish accompanied by fresh locally-grown vegetables. Fish lovers simply won’t be able to resist two of its best-known specialties: peix sec (literally dried fish) and guisat de peix (fish and shellfish stewed with potatoes). Inland, treat your taste buds to sofrit pagès, a lamb, chicken and potato casserole.
Sobrassada and botifarró sausages and Ibiza’s locally-produced honey go down a treat when enjoyed with the wines made on the island. Those with a sweet tooth will find it impossible to resist traditional island desserts such as flaó (cheesecake flavoured with anis) and orelleta (anis pastries) or greixonera (a kind of sweet bread pudding), which taste even better when accompanied by a glass of Frígola liqueur, made with eau-de-vie, thyme, sugar and water, or "hierbas ibicencas", made with anisette and the herbs that grow locally on Ibiza.
