San Juan: Menorca gets ready for its biggest celebration

June is a big month for Menorca. The island welcomes the summer celebrating the feast of its patron saint San Juan, a unique event in Spain, with centuries of tradition, that congregates every 23rd of June thousands of locals and visitors in Ciudadela, ready to toast to the shortest night of the year.

Although more tourist attend the celebration of San Juan in Menorca, the celebrations have not lost an inch of tradition and authenticity and locals surrender to celebration opening the doors of their houses to friends and strangers alike.

The fun, the pomada -the traditional drink consisting of gin and squeezed lemon- and fire does not diminish the main source of inspiration of these celebrations: the horse. The parades and offerings are one of the biggest attractions for visitors to admire, all dressed up for the occasion and making elegant dances and spectacular twists, known as jaleos.

The horse riders, called caixers, wear traditional white garments with black details and are responsible to interpret with their horses, the rhythm of traditional songs that resonate through the streets of Ciutadella.

Attending one of these festivities is a unique experience and can be a perfect reason to organise a escapade to Menorca with friends or as a couple.   A good option in these cases is to book in advance a villa in Menorca. At Garden Hotels, apart from our hotel Marina Garden, we also have a complex of villas in Cala d’en Bosch, both just 10 Km from Ciutadella.
