Puerto de Alcudia
Mallorca
History
There are indications that human occupation occurred in Alcudia PreTalayotic period (2000 - 1200 BC). Today, even though talayots are preserved, we can highlight the "village of Son Simo." Roman Consul Metellus joined Mallorca in the Roman Republic in 123 BC and founded the cities of Pollentia and Palma. The archaeological remains of the city of prosperity Pollentia show who grew the city. Manor houses, a theatre, shops and other public buildings are evidence of this. The Barbarian Invasions in the V century Pollentia plunged to a process of decay and destruction, facts which are evident in the archaeological excavations. In 1229, King James I joined Mallorca in the Crown of Aragon., and, from the remains of Muslim property, built the town of Alcudia and the stated capital of the parish to the end of 1298. Since this year began the construction of the first wall, which ended in 1362. The town of Alcudia has a medieval street layout, provides two enclosures of walls that surround it. The streets are narrow and irregular, some buildings have retained the characteristics of the splendid epoch of the city and are of great architectural value. The city became a refuge in danger many times, but during the popular revolt of the Germanies, the walls were a key factor. The nobles took refuge in Alcudia Mallorca, while the revolt was quelled by the troops of Emperor Charles I. Once completed, he was rewarded the loyalty of the city of Alcudia and it received, among other benefits, the Faithful City title in 1523. Already in the twentieth century, in 1957 established a factory in Alcudia power (GESA) that supplied the whole island. The first tourists came to Alcudia in the early twentieth century, but the vast tourism industry was not developed until the 70, as in the rest of Mallorca. Currently, Alcudia is devoted entirely to the tourist industry, and has more than 29,000 hotel rooms. The town of Alcudia and the archaeological zone of Pollentia were declared a Historic-Artistic Site. In recent years they have launched various schemes to conserve and restore these areas.
