History History

HistoriaSanta Eulària des Riu is located in the Eastern part of the island in the Muslim epoch that was called Xarc. It was with the Catalan conquest when the island was modified and divided into four similiar to those of the municipal that exists today. The fourth Eulària des Riu Santa corresponded to Infante Pedro de Portugal, Lord Bishop Guillermo Montgrí Tarragona, of which had the regal rights to conquest. King James I acquired the rights to Pedro of Portugal, to be renamed the King's Room. This provided some legal rights and that the King was the Lord of the Bishop of Tarragona, which in turn was a subject to the King. The name Santa Eulària originates from the church which was built immediately after the conquest. Furthermore, the area, has the only river in the Balearic Islands, a great importance at this time for the irrigation of orchards and flour mills. The town grew around the church in the Puig de Missa. Today's church is of the 16th Century, as is the tower which is attached and from which artillery could defend the whole country. Today the district comprises, also the Parish of Sant Carles de Peralta and Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, and part of Our Lady of Jesus and the De'n Puig Valls.
