Mallorca is much more than fabulous beaches and hidden coves. In the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, lies the Dry Stone Route (GR 221), a route that invites you to delve into the very essence of the truest essence of the island.
A journey into the past, among extraordinary landscapes
The Dry Stone Route – known locally as Pedra en Sec – extends over 244 signposted kilometres, of which 138.6 km correspond to the main route running from La Trapa (in the municipality of Andratx) to Port de Pollença, and 105.6 km to its variants. This trail takes you along old roads that have been restored, through charming villages, majestic mountains and breathtaking stretches of coastline.
During the tour, you will discover the ancestral technique of dry stone, used to build terraces, walls and shelters that form part of the cultural landscape of the Tramuntana. You will also have the opportunity to explore historical remains, such as snow houses and windmills, and soak up the rich Mallorcan tradition, architecture and gastronomy.
Essential stages of the Dry Stone Route
The GR 221 is divided into 8 main stages, with several variants. You can find all of them listed in the explanatory leaflet produced by the Consell de Mallorca; some of the most outstanding ones include:
– Esporles to Deià (Can Boi): A route that combines sea views, lush holm oak forests and the charms of Mallorcan villages.
– Deià to Sóller (Muleta): Ideal for those who love the sea and mountains, with landscapes that will take your breath away.
– Tossals Verds a Lluc (Son Amer): A perfect stage for the more adventurous, which includes one of the highest legs of the route – the Coll de ses Cases de Neu (1,200 m).
