Yesterday, 4 November, was an important day in the history of Garden Hotels, as our chain became the first Spanish hotel chain to receive the AENOR certificate for its Circular Economy strategy and management. This certification recognises all the initiatives and specific projects that we have carried out since 2015 with respect to the collection, selection and treatment of the waste we produce, which is transformed into resources that are then returned to the value chain.
The event took place at the Playa Garden Selection Hotel & Spa and was attended by leading personalities from the hotel industry in Mallorca and by members of the Government and the Island Council of Mallorca. The event presented the foundations of the Circular Economy as we understand it in our company, namely a policy based on encouraging the consumption of local produce and on reducing that of natural resources, always seeking to achieve the ultimate goal of “zero waste” enshrined in the Circular Economy philosophy.
If we have been able to implement and to continue to advance and evolve in this project, it has been thanks to the efforts made by each and every member of the Garden Hotels team. In this way, we have succeeded in becoming a national and international benchmark in terms of Circular Economy, thus contributing from our land of Mallorca to the promotion of good sustainable practices not only within our industry but also in a transversal way.
During the award ceremony, Magda Ramis, executive vice-president of Garden Hotels, underlined the love her parents had for the land, a love they have always passed on to her: “My father was a trailblazer for the circular economy, he has spent the past 30 years imbuing the company he founded with a love for local produce and our roots”. Gabriel Llobera, executive vice-president and CEO of the company stressed that “as far as Garden Hotels is concerned, this certification consolidates our determination to be market leaders in the tourism industry in terms of the implementation of an effective and real circular economy strategy”.
Soledad Seisdedos, director of AENOR in the Balearic Islands, stressed that “this certificate endorses Garden Hotels’ commitment to quality and its efforts on behalf of the environment and the Circular Economy, which are based on extending the life cycle of products, reducing the consumption of resources and raw materials, and minimising the generation of waste”.
