Flora and fauna
The coves and untouched beaches that can be discoveres close to Calas de Mallorca are part of the site declared a Natural Area of Special Interest because it is an area of great ecologial importance.
Surrounded by nature and bathed by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, this area is rich in pine, rosemary, sea fennel and gorse bushes. Thaks to the warm temperatures, this part part of the Mallorcan Levant also provides the perfect conditions for tamarind trees and reed beds netx to the coast.
The most famous species that can be found here include the Iberian hare, the Mediterranean tortoise, the common egret eagle and the goldfinch, among many others.
Gastronomy
The local cuisine is renowned for its mouth-watering flavours and variety. Traditional dishes include frit de porc (stir-fried pork, potatoes and peppers), tumbet (Majorca’s version of ratatouille), arròs brut (a meat and vegetable rice dish) and sopes mallorquines (vegetables and meat simmered slowly with bread to soak up the stock).
Sobrassada is Majorca’s best-known cured meat, made from pork, bacon and paprika.
When it comes to sweets and pastries, nothing can compare with a delicious ensaïmada. Wound round to form a spiral shape, this exquisite pastry can be filled with a wide range of ingredients, such as cream, chocolate, confectioner’s custard and sweet pumpkin jam. Wine is also deeply rooted in the island’s cultural heritage; two regions have been awarded a Designation of Origin: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant.
History and culture
The famous Cuevas del Drach, located 15km from Calas de Mallorca, are one of the main attractions on the Mallorcan coastline.
A kilometre in size, this incredible natural cave stands out above the others for having the largest cave formations on the island. Lake Martel, located in the centre of the cave, serves as the stage for the classical music concert that has entertained visitors since 1935.
Other recommended caves are the Cuevas dels Hams and Coves Blanques, located in the town of Porto Cristo. The Castle of Santueri, in the mountainous area of the Mallorcan Levant, is a historical example of 13th century island life and is one of the few remaining castles made from rocks in Mallorca.
