Menorca, one of the most idyllic destinations in the Mediterranean, comes alive in August with two festivals not to be missed: the Fiestas of Sant Bartomeu in Ferreries and the Fiestas of Sant Lluís. These celebrations are not only a testament to the island’s rich cultural tradition, but also provide an opportunity for visitors to have fun while immersing themselves in Menorca’s local community life. At Garden Hotels, we invite you to enjoy these fiestas while staying at our cosy Marinda Garden Aparthotel in Cala d’en Bosch.
Sant Bartomeu festivals in Ferreries
On 23 and 24 August, Ferreries is transformed into a colourful and traditional setting to celebrate its patron saint, Sant Bartomeu. This fiesta, with roots dating back to the 16th century, is famous for its cavalcades and the distribution of candles among the locals. Highlights:
- Procession of horses: The cavalcade features the caixers (horsemen) and cavallers, riders dressed in 19th century costume, who follow the fabioler (Leader of the parade). This character, mounted on a donkey, plays the flute and drum, announcing the arrival of the procession.
- Candle distribution: The cavallers give these candles to their neighbours, ensuring protection during winter storms.
- Community and culture: The fiesta begins with the first drum and flute playing from the town hall, an event that brings the whole community together in a spirit of celebration and unity.
Sant Lluís Fiestas
On the last weekend in August, Sant Lluís celebrates its patron saint’s fiestas in honour of Luis IX. This small town, founded during the brief period of French rule over Menorca, combines its rich history with stunning scenery and a vibrant party culture. The highlights are:
- Colcada dels caixers: This traditional cavalcade brings together riders from all over the island, starting the progression through the streets to the rhythm of the fabioler, who sets the beat with his flute and drum.
- Jaleo: An impressive spectacle where horses and caixers demonstrate their skill, dancing around the crowd in a show of dexterity and tradition.
- Parades and fireworks: During the festive days, you can enjoy parades of floats, firework displays and dances of giants, immersing you in the authentic Menorcan experience.
