The Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, brings some of the very best tennis players to Mallorca. This year, the tournament is part of the Challenger category for the first time, making it the first to be held at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor. Tennis fans will be able to enjoy this event in Mallorca, the first ATP competition in the whole of the Balearic Islands, which is celebrating its fifth edition this year, earning its place as a major summer sporting event in Mallorca. The fast courts at the Rafa Nadal Academy will be the playing field for various Spanish and international tennis players from 28 August to 3 September 2023.
Previous successful editions of the Rafa Nadal Open, attended by nearly 10,000 spectators, have been won by Australian tennis player Bernand Tomic (2018), Emil Ruusuvuori (2019), the Slovakian Luckas Lacko (2021) and rising star Luca Nardi (2022). This competition has also welcomed the current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, the former world number one, Andy Murray, and such famous Spanish tennis players as Fernando Verdasco and Pablo Andújar.
The ATP Challenger Tour is the prelude to the Grand Slams and is the second level of professional tennis. It is important to play this tournament first as a stepping stone to competing in the higher level ATP tournaments. Players come with the aim of climbing the world rankings, so attendees may be able to witness the playing skills of a future winner of Roland-Garros or Wimbledon, or any other of the Grand Slam tournaments.
