Fauna and flora
The Dehesa de San Miguel, where El Rompido is located, is a protected nature and bird-watching area.
Its marshes are home to species such as the osprey, the common curlew and the ruddy turnstone. Numerous migratory birds also reproduce here, including the western marsh harrier, the Caspian tern and the little tern. As for reptiles, the chameleon is the most iconic species. Within Europe, this lizard is only found on the coast of Andalusia, the coast of Murcia and the Algarve.
Vegetation typical of the El Rompido dunes includes Portuguese thyme and Gaudinia grass.

Dining
As for cuisine, everything begins in the Sierra de Aracena itself. The Iberian pig feeds on chestnut trees and holm oaks, giving rise to jabugo ham, one of the most famous and highly appreciated delicacies the world over.
But ham is not just the only delicacy in this area. It’s also famous for its seafood, such as wedge clams, deepwater rose prawns, normal clams and fiddler crabs. Other typical dishes are gazpacho, fried whitebait and wild-caught tuna.
Huelva is also famous for the quality of its wines, recognised with the Condado de Huelva Designation of Origin, with standouts including young and fruity whites and full-bodied fortified wines.

History and culture
This coastal town is famous for its cultural and historical heritage, preserving rich vestiges of bygone civilisations, with Phoenicians, Muslims and Romans leaving behind major archaeological remains.
The Castillo de San Miguel was a fortress built in the sixteenth century that controlled the mouth of the River Piedras and served to defend the town.
Other attractions include the corn mills, the fourteenth-century industrial buildings on the banks of the River Piedras, and the town’s recently renovated lighthouse.

Recreation and leisure
This wonderful destination boasts a multitude of sports and leisure activities.
You can discover the coastline by bike, Segway or on foot; descend the River Piedras by kayak or canoe; enjoy water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing on the Gulf of Cádiz; or perfect your swing on the golf courses near the hotel. The area also has a sports centre, a water park and a go-karting track.

Beaches and surroundings
The town of El Rompido is located within the municipality of Cartaya, next to the mouth of the River Piedras. It’s a former fishing port with a major maritime tradition and home to some famous seafarers.
This pocket-sized coastal town is home to more than ten kilometres of pristine beaches and calm crystal-clear waters. The beaches of El Rompido are separated from the Atlantic by a unique sand spit, the Flecha de El Rompido, which gives rise to the marshland by the River Piedras.
