This charming coastal and seaside town in the Llevant of Mallorca attracts all the most curious palates with Mostra de la Llampuga 2023. During the second weekend of October, we invite you to come to Cala Rajada to taste ‘llampuga’, a delicious blue fish that the local artisanal fishermen bring from the sea to the table; a delicacy that will captivate your senses, cooked in countless and surprising ways
‘Llampuga’ with peppers, marinated, in succulent tapas dishes, croquettes, fideuá, paella or ‘carpaccios’. This mouth-watering fish is in season from the end of the summer and is the star of the iconic 20th Mostra de la Llampuga 2023. Over three days, on 13, 14 and 15 October, you can taste it at the Cap de Setmana del Peix Fresc. Begin your gastronomic journey on Friday 13th at the Tapas Night, with free admission, and enjoy the 13th Culinary Tapas Competition. The following day, Saturday 14th, at the popular seafood festival, you’ll be captivated by the unmistakable aroma of fish paella, which you’ll be able to try at a very cheap price of 7 euros, and then let yourself be carried away by the music that will accompany you by the sea. And, at the end of the festival, on Sunday the 15th, the 20th Mostra de la Llampuga festival will take place.
A fun fact: Did you know that the llampuga usually makes its appearance in Mediterranean waters at the same time as the first storms that herald the change of season? In fact, its name could derive from the Catalan word “llampegar”, which means to flash. Its characteristic golden colour, which fades immediately when removed from the water, and its small size, rarely exceeding 50 cm in the Mediterranean, make it unmistakable.
The eagerly awaited Mostra del Llampuga could not be held in a more idyllic setting than Cala Rajada, a coastal town in Mallorca, which welcomes curious visitors with its traditional fishing port dotted with ‘llauts’, a traditional Mallorcan boat. This important celebration of the local product, the ‘llampuga’, will surprise you with popular dinners, havaneres concerts, craft exhibitions and a trade fairs from the municipality of Capdepera, which will turn the weekend into a festival of culture and gastronomy. Moreover, if you decide to come on a Saturday, you can also explore the weekly market and sample its exquisite products or buy some of the area’s prized handicrafts as souvenirs. You should also make a point of visiting the castle of Capdepera, a protected figure of Balearic historical heritage, which you can visit all year round on an easy excursion that will allow you to see the neighbouring island of Menorca on a clear day.
And as an added bonus, if you have always dreamed of becoming a daring ‘sea wolf’, this is your chance: together with the traditional fishermen of Cala Rajada, you can experience the adventure of fishing the prized ‘llampuga’ in their company and discover all its secrets directly from those who know it best.
