We’ll start with the renowned ‘Camí de Cavalls’, a historic hiking route which covers the entire coast of Menorca in twenty sign-posted stages. The 185-kilometre route is an official long-distance walking trail, GR223. We’re not suggesting you do the whole route, but whichever stretch you choose, you’ll enjoy walking among pine forests, alongside beaches, and pretty villages, discovering the beauty of the island, all in the best company: with your family. For example, you could put your hiking boots on and do the part of the route that goes from Cala Sant Esteve to Maó: 6 kilometres along an easy route, which takes about 2 hours, or maybe a section that takes you from Cap d’Artrutx to Cala en Turqueta, both located along the southern coast of the island.
Take your lead from the 7 lighthouses. At Cap de Favàritx (Maó) you’ll find the lighthouse of the same name, located in an area known for the unusual visual impression caused by the dark tone of the rocks and the sparse vegetation. You could also visit the Faro de Cavalleria, in Es Mercadal; Faro de Punta Nati, 6 kilometres outside Ciutadella; Faro de Sa Farola, in Ciutadella; Faro de la Isla del Aire, in Sant Lluís, and Faro de Sant Carlos, in Maó.
The best family-friendly routes.
The Parque Natural de s’Albufera d’Es Grau is another unmissable attraction when you’re visiting Menorca with the family. Did you know it’s the only Nature Reserve on the island and it is the heart of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve? Here you’ll find different sign-posted routes to walk along with the kids, like Sa Gola, which takes you through the local area and the beach at Es Grau, until you arrive at Sa Gola viewing point which has a spectacular panoramic view of s’ Albufera d’Es Grau and the surrounding area.
Other interesting places to visit with the little ones are the archaeological sites that represent the prehistoric Talaiotic culture, such as the huge Naveta des Tudons, the oldest naviform remains discovered in Europe, which you can find along the road between Maó and Ciutadella, and the nearby Talaiotic settlements of Torrellafuda and Torretrencada, and the beaches at Sant Tomàs or Binigaus are also well worth a visit.
