Only twice a year will you have the opportunity to marvel at the unique play of light that fills Mallorca Cathedral with magic. The next date for the Festival of Light is the 2nd of February 2024, the feast of Candlemas.
La Seu, as Mallorca Cathedral is known, is hosting the Festival of Light 2024, a unique and special phenomenon that is not repeated in any other cathedral in Europe. Moreover, with the particularity that this ‘miracle’ can only be witnessed twice a year, in November, on the 11th of the 11th, and in February, on the 2nd of the 2nd.
The Festival of Light 2024: a unique event worldwide
What makes it so unique? To your surprise, you can see how the interior wall of the main façade of the Seu draws a perfect figure of eight. As the sunlight enters the spectacular Gothic setting of the Cathedral, the major and minor rose windows line up. As a result, you will admire an incomparable chromatic projection of light that will delight the thousands of visitors who congregate on these special days to witness this fabulous exaltation. The reason for this wonder is attributed to the circumstantial conjunction of different events in the construction of the Mallorcan cathedral.
Such is the expectation around seeing this marvellous combination of nature and architecture that the Seu opens its doors first thing in the morning, at around 7:30 a.m. (free entry with limited seating). The event can also be followed live on the Cathedral of Mallorca’s YouTube channel.
Discover the nooks and crannies of the Cathedral
Strolling through the impressive rooms of the Seu, you will discover that this monument was built from the 13th century onwards. Its central nave is about 44 metres high, making it one of the tallest cathedrals in Europe. You can get to know its history and the most important reforms carried out by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and the Felanitxer artist Miquel Barceló by visiting it at any time of the year. Winter opening hours are from November to March, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Summer opening hours are from April to October, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Moreover, from the heights of its terraces, you will be able to contemplate the bustling streets of Palma’s historic quarter as well as the immensity of the Mediterranean, on a route made to enjoy the flying buttresses, the main rose window, the bell tower and the city’s skyline.
