The 17th of May marks World Recycling Day, a date that highlights the importance of sustainable practices to protect the planet. At Garden Hotels, as pioneers in sustainability and the circular economy, we are committed to recycling and protecting the environment, integrating these values into every aspect of our operation.
Sustainable projects: Renetas and Composting
One of our most innovative projects, Renetas, came to Playa de Muro last summer with both environmental and social objectives. Are you one of those people who, at the start of your holidays, the first thing you do before going to the beach is to buy a float or an inflatable mattress? The goal of Renetas is to collect these PVC products, which are difficult to recycle and often end up being incinerated. Our aim in joining this initiative is to reduce this waste, improving the sustainability and circularity of Playa de Muro. In collaboration with the Hotel Association of Playa de Muro and the Reconatura Foundation, we collect and give a new life to these materials, avoiding their burning and reducing their environmental impact.
Another example of our commitment is the kitchen waste composting project. At Garden Hotels, we promote local and environmentally friendly products, and we recycle all kitchen waste to produce compost. This compost is then used in organic farming, closing the cycle of sustainability. With the active participation of our staff, we ensure that kitchen waste is deposited correctly, without improper elements, for transfer to composting areas. The result is a high-quality compost that fertilises new organic crops, which are in turn used to prepare healthy and sustainable dishes for our customers.
Garden Hotels philosophy: The 4 Rs
Our philosophy is based on the 4 Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Taking advantage of this World Recycling Day, we encourage you to apply these actions in your daily life, as they are so important for the environment. Here’s what we do:
- “Zero plastic” policy: We eliminate all single-use plastic items, replacing them with sustainable alternatives.
- Decreased consumption of bottled water: We provide refillable bottles and purified water dispensers for both employees and customers.
- Elimination of single-use amenities: In the rooms, we replaced these items with refillable dispensers.
- Reduction of packaging: We apply criteria to reduce the production of packaging, displaying products in bulk at buffets.
- Paperless policy: We reduce paper consumption and the associated waste.
- Purchase of recyclable toners: We work with suppliers who offer recyclable toners.
- Waste sorting and recycling: We provide waste sorting containers for both employees and customers.
- Composting of organic matter: We use all organic waste generated in the kitchen and garden to produce compost suitable for organic farming.
- Furniture refurbishment: We prioritise refurbishment to extend the life of the furniture and minimise bulky waste.
- Recycling of oil: We deliver used cooking oil to authorised managers for recycling and use as biodiesel.
- Management of hazardous waste: We have systems for the correct management and delivery of hazardous waste to authorised waste managers.
At Garden Hotels, we believe that every action counts and we are committed to sustainability and recycling. We celebrate World Recycling Day by reinforcing our dedication to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices in the tourism sector. Join us on this journey towards a greener future!
