There are two commemorations marked on the calendar for the first week of June that we at Garden Hotels could not ignore: World Environment Day (5 June) and World Ocean Day (8 June). These dates remind us of something we firmly believe in: the importance of caring for and preserving our natural environment. Besides talking about sustainability, we like to take action, so we are delighted to have set ourselves an ambitious challenge this season: to carry out more than 50 beach clean-ups. This commitment reflects not only our dedication to sustainability, but also our social responsibility as a hotel chain.
For more than 10 years now, we have organised an annual beach clean-up in front of the Playa Garden Selection Hotel & Spa, demonstrating our support and commitment to caring for the environment. This year, however, we have decided to go one step further. By integrating this activity into the Garden Experience programme of activities, we will carry out two monthly beach clean-ups in all our hotels. This adds up to more than 50 throughout the entire season as we step up our efforts to preserve the beauty and health of our shores.
Celebrating World Ocean Day
On 8 June, in tandem with all the company’s hotels, we will carry out beach clean-ups at the following locations:
- Playa de Muro: Hotels Playa Garden Selection Hotel & Spa and Green Holiday Village.
- Playa del Puerto de Alcudia: Alcudia Garden Aparthotel.
- Cala Agulla: Green Garden Aparthotel.
- Playa de Cala Millor: Cala Millor Garden Hotel.
- Playa Es Farallò: Tropic Garden Hotel & Apartments.
- Playa Cala’n Bosch: Marinda Garden Aparthotel.
- Playa de San Miguel: Garden Playanatural Hotel.
The activity will commence at 10 am with a brief introduction to the importance of environmental conservation and the impacts generated by plastic waste.
We will then head to the beaches where we will collect waste following the citizen science methodology developed by the Marnoba platform. This platform, promoted by the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD), focuses on the classification of marine litter on beaches and seabeds along the Spanish coastline.
We will also be working alongside our environmental management consultancy, SostenibleXXI, and as special guests at Playa Garden, we will be accompanied by students and teachers of biology and industrial engineering from IES Inca. These students have carried out a project on the impact of microplastics in the Mediterranean Sea and how to combat them, bringing additional educational and scientific value to our clean-up day.
Awareness and action
At the end of the collection, we will share some information about the degradation of marine litter at sea, with the intention of raising awareness and empowering participants to act on this global problem. After the event, we will enjoy a well-deserved and locally produced refreshments at the Papaya Snack Bar, courtesy of the hotel, to celebrate our collective effort for a cleaner world.
We invite you to join us on this important mission. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that future generations can enjoy the same natural wonders that we have. See you on the beach!
