The commitment of Garden Hotels to the environment has been demonstrated once again with our recent beach clean-up day, organised in commemoration of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. This activity, part of our constant search for actions to promote sustainability in the hotel sector, produced some surprising and motivating results that we would like to share with you.
In a single morning, we managed to:
– Save 2,000 litres of water.
– Avoid more than 60 kg of CO2 emissions.
– Remove more than 1,000 cigarette butts and 2,000 pieces of plastic from our beaches.
These figures are just the beginning of what we hope to achieve with our ongoing clean-up and conservation initiatives. The goal is to surpass 50 actions this season!
Waste most commonly seen on our beaches
On 8 June we identified the most common types of waste found on the Balearic coasts. According to data from the Marnoba platform, the 10 most frequent are:
- Cigarette butts.
- Plastic pieces from 0 to 2.5 cm.
- Plastic pieces from 2.5 cm to 50 cm.
- Glass bottles and jars.
- Beverage bottles.
- Shopping bags, food and frozen food.
- Bags, wrappers and sticks from sweets.
- Container lids and caps.
- Plastic pieces larger than 50 cm.
- Lines, baits and light tubes/glow sticks.
At Garden Hotels, we are convinced that every little action counts. The beach clean-up is just one part of our ongoing effort to reduce our environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices. With every event and initiative, we seek to inspire our guests and the community to join us in the fight against climate change and pollution. So, when you visit the beaches, remember:
– Use reusable food and beverage containers and utensils for your food and beverages.
– Collect and dispose of your waste in the litter bins, never on the sand.
– Respect the flora and fauna of the natural environment. Do not access the dunes or disturb the birds.
– Do not throw waste into the sea.
– Don’t leave cigarette butts in the sand; they are pollutants.
– Don’t use shower gel or shampoo and use water responsibly.
– Enjoy the beach responsibly and leave it as you would like to find it.
– Dispose of plastic containers, cans and cartons in the appropriate containers.
All of us who participated in this day did so with a smile on our faces; we learned from it and we are looking forward to repeating it. We would like to thank all the participants and partners who made this event possible. Together, we can make a real and lasting difference in the conservation of our beautiful natural environments.
