Fauna and flora
Ibiza’s coastline is home to an array of endemic species, thanks to its rocky seabeds and prairies of Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant that favours the purity and transparency of its waters. Major colonies of seabirds live near the coast, such as the Mediterranean shearwater, the Audouin’s gull and the European shag.
Meanwhile, the island’s land-based wildlife includes reptiles such as the Ibiza wall lizard and the Moorish gecko.
Dining
Ibizan cuisine fuses meat or fish with locally sourced vegetables. Peix sec (dried fish) and guisat de peix (fish stew) are two exquisite specialities for fish lovers. Meanwhile, sofrit pagès is a lamb and chicken stew with potatoes, typical of inland villages.
And, of course, sobrasada (sausage), botifarró (blood sausage) and Ibizan honey marry perfectly with local wines. What’s more, traditional Ibizan desserts such as flaó (peppermint-flavoured cheesecake), greixonera (bread pudding) and orelleta (shortbread) are washed down with Frígola, made with brandy, thyme, sugar and water, or Hierbas Ibicencas, made with anise and herbs.
