El Toyo - Cabo de Gata, Almeria
CALMING THE SOUL
Nestling among rugged cliffs and sheltered beaches bathed by calm waters lies a protected space of outstanding natural value. El Toyo is the gateway to the heavenly Cabo de Gata, which provides an unspoilt natural habitat for unique species in a truly privileged climate. This is the perfect backdrop for sport, adventure and fun for all the family.
The beaches and surroundings
The residential development of El Toyo is situated just 13 km outside Almeria, next to one of the Mediterranean’s most jealously-guarded natural areas, the Cabo de Gata - Níjar Nature Park. Overlooking the Alboran Sea, this stunning landscape, dotted with inlets tucked between overpoweringly sheer cliffs and covering some 50,000 hectares, was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997.
The dark sand and gravel beach at El Toyo stretches out for an impressive 1,300 metres and is backed by a long promenade peppered with viewpoints offering spectacular sea views. It has all the necessary facilities, including disabled access, showers, a car park and lifeguard station, to name but a few.
Leisure and free time
El Toyo’s warm, sunny climate coupled with extensive leisure facilities guarantee a great holiday for all the family. The activities on offer include adventure sports, hiking, horse riding, scuba diving, windsurfing and golf. What’s more, a large network of cycle lanes makes for interesting trails across the autochthonous vegetation. The earth tracks that crisscross the Cabo de Gata - Níjar Nature Park are ideal for fans of mountain biking.
This area has extensive sports facilities that are open to the public, a Convention Centre and an attractive leisure area with a wide choice of bars and restaurants set around an artificial lake overlooking the sea.
Flora and fauna
Almeria’s coastline boasts an immense ecological wealth; in fact, it attracts a number of tropical Atlantic species that cannot be seen anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Frequent visitors to these shores include the common dolphin, the black pilot whale, the loggerhead sea turtle and the leatherback sea turtle.
The Alboran Sea also has immense meadows of marine phanerogams, maerl beds and many unusual species such as red coral and date shells.
History and culture
Eastern Almeria’s vast cultural and environmental treasure trove includes the Millares archaeological site, the Alcazaba Arab fortress, the Muslim Torre García fortification and the Phoenician ruins of Abdera, in Adra, and Villaricos , in Cuevas del Almanzora.
Visitors will marvel at the arid landscapes of the Tabernas Desert, the traditional Moorish farmsteads and the intriguing olive, almond and orange tree groves.
In this seafaring land, it is quite understandable that fresh fish and seafood form an essential part of the local cuisine. Yet this region is also famed for its delicious stews and casseroles made from fresh local produce such as ajoblanco (chilled garlic and almond soup), sopa moruna (lamb and lentil soup) and tabernero (stewed pepper, onion and fresh tomato). This is also a great place for visitors to widen their culinary horizons with a large selection of mouth-watering tapas, including the traditional patatas bravas (spicy potatoes) calamari, jibia en salsa (cuttlefish in sauce), tabernero and migas (semolina soaked in garlic and oil, served with fried pork).
For those with a craving for something sweet, leche frita (fried milk squares), bizcochos de dátiles (date sponge cakes), soplillos (almond pastries) and tubos de nata (cream-filled puff pastry tubes) should all be top of the list.
