To begin with, you should know that the beach at Playas de Muro is one of the longest in the Balearic Islands; it’s divided into four sections: Playa de Muro, which encompasses sectors I and II; Es Comú, and Es Capellans, giving you 5.2 km of fine sand and clear Mediterranean waters to discover. Fiestas de Sant Joan, gastronomy and evening festival
June arrives and with it the characteristic scent of the Linden tree blossom in the Plaza de Muro. The streets come alive with the preparations for the celebrations of the town’s patron saint, Sant Joan. The celebrations usually last about a fortnight and end on the 24th of June, Sant Joan’s Day, with a great firework display on the Passeig de sa Riba. The festivities include many cultural and sporting activities such as sopar a la fresca when everyone brings food and eats dinner outdoors, and the traditional evening of the 40 voltes, a peculiar test of stamina that involves running forty times around the Plaza Mayor.
During July, we have the Cós de Sant Jaume races, an occasion when children and equestrians are the stars of the event. It happens on the Sunday closest to Sant Jaume’s Day, which is the 25th of July. The children start off around 12 midday and later in the afternoon there are horse races for riders in every category.
In August, festivities move to Playas de Muro, the coastal area, hosting the evening market with stalls selling handicrafts, traditional Mallorcan food and products. Among the typical dishes on offer you’ll be able to try Llom amb esclatassangs, arròs brut, words amb col, sopes, tumbet, albergínies farcides and many more, all with that special touch that characterises the gastronomy of the area, and let’s not forget the eel, a species found in the Albufera. Sweet items include bunyols, rosaris, coques dolces amb sobrassada, ensaïmades, coques raïssones, robiols, crespells, gatons or the traditional quartos.
